‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is a dazzling comic-book spectacle a decade in the making

18 movies. 10 years. After much build-up, pre-release hype, and social-media speculation and guessing games along with every small superhero collaborations and victory, the time finally arrived. Marvel Studios brought all of their heroes together – and they did mean “all” – for a battle for the fate of the universe. A movie that hasContinue reading “‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is a dazzling comic-book spectacle a decade in the making”

Wes Anderson’s ‘Isle of Dogs’ is a comical but tenderhearted dog tale.

Outside of 2012’s Moonrise Kingdom, I haven’t been exposed to Wes Anderson’s directorial work (Before any comments come in, Fantastic Mr. Fox has already been recommended to me). Seeing what I’ve seen from Moonrise Kingdom and Fantastic Mr. Fox, Anderson has a certain whimsy to his movies. But whimsy doesn’t last forever. While seeing IsleContinue reading “Wes Anderson’s ‘Isle of Dogs’ is a comical but tenderhearted dog tale.”

‘Ready Player One’: a thrilling sci-fi popcorn fantasy that honors the youth in us all.

Steven Spielberg. The measuring stick of directors, both current and aspiring, has been celebrated for his mastery behind the camera. At one time or another, someone has watched a Spielberg film. Besides his more adult-themed movies such as Saving Private Ryan, Lincoln, and Schindler’s List, the 71-year old has stoked the imagination with The AdventuresContinue reading “‘Ready Player One’: a thrilling sci-fi popcorn fantasy that honors the youth in us all.”

Nervy, Smart, and Brilliant: ‘A Quiet Place’ does it all.

At first glace of the title, ‘A Quiet Place’ sounds like it should be a full-fledged drama film: a young attractive couple seemingly raising their children out in the middle of a rural area. Long country walks, fishing, and board games by gaslight is what you would expect. The reality is this family lives inContinue reading “Nervy, Smart, and Brilliant: ‘A Quiet Place’ does it all.”

Alicia Vikander brings grounded story to life in ‘Tomb Raider’ reboot

We all remember Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, right? Back in 2001, Angelina Jolie fulfilled the dream casting of fans by becoming the live action realization of the video game heroine. While this movie is beloved by a very select few, Warner Bros. decided to capitalize on the resurgence of the Tomb Raider series and update the franchiseContinue reading “Alicia Vikander brings grounded story to life in ‘Tomb Raider’ reboot”

‘Annihilation’ is a thinking person’s sci-fi film with annoying loose ends.

I’m no stranger to smart sci-fi films. One of my first genres that made me fall in love with films was science fiction (it was Star Wars so some fantasy is mixed in). After getting through Arrival, I didn’t think I would encounter a smart but weird sci-fi film. Then I walked into Annihilation.

Jennifer Lawrence’s weapons of espionage and seduction defend a lukewarm ‘Red Sparrow’

American democracy is under siege from our old foe once again, putting the world in a sequel to the Cold War. If there was a movie that has come at the right time, it would be Red Sparrow. If only it was a better movie that I could talk about after it was over.

‘Game Night’ is an entertaining take on the murder mystery with guaranteed laughs.

While films like Black Panther rule the box office, there are other movies that have released that you should notice. One such film takes a social get-together that takes place in bars and family living rooms to a whole new level. With the help of comedic veterans like Jason Bateman and newcomers to the bigContinue reading “‘Game Night’ is an entertaining take on the murder mystery with guaranteed laughs.”

‘Black Panther’ claims its throne with style, a stellar cast, and rich storytelling.

After much hype, advertisement, television spots, and a stellar 98% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (if you want to rate the movies you see from critics), the Marvel Cinematic Universe unleashed its newest film. And this superhero film exceeds expectations.

‘The Post’ delivers an obvious message, elevated by Hanks’ and Streep’s performances

If there was ever a movie more suited for this current time, The Post would be the one. In this current era, where words are tossed around like “fake news”, we need to be reminded about speaking truth to power through the written word. Despite the period-specific sideburns and a screen choked with casual cigarette smokeContinue reading “‘The Post’ delivers an obvious message, elevated by Hanks’ and Streep’s performances”
