The Disney film world was such a wholesome place to enjoy. You have new animated films coming in a few weeks and superhero shows blowing our minds. Now we’ve gotten our first trailer for Cruella and I can already see the amount of people looking to see if they can pull off two-tone hair.
Disney’s most glamorous villain gets the live-action treatment in a prequel starring Emma Stone as the fur-crazed fashionista in 1970s London, decades before she became a fashion icon of the 90’s style in Glenn Close’s embodiment of the villainess. I, Tonya director Craig Gillespie helms this punk-rock take on Ms. de Vil.
It’s been almost a year and a half since Disney first released our first-look photo of Stone as the title character, revealed in summer 2019 at the D23 Expo. After a new poster, consisting of a high-contrast black-and-white close-up of the heroine – or should we still stick to antiheroine?
The woman who was “born brilliant. But also bad – and a little bit mad” will also have other familiar characters by her side as the film also stars Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry as Cruella’s henchmen Horace and Jasper, and Emma Thompson as the Baroness, the head of a fashion house where our budding villainess gets a job.
My initial reaction is that this film looks good, but I would have liked maybe thirty seconds more to fully absorb Emma Stone’s portrayal of Ms. de Vil, seeing how cruel this character could become. It feels like they are going more of a Harley Quinn route, showing the edge of madness that Cruella seems to be riding along on. But she is also intelligent and the chaos she could be cause is surely calculated. Based on this trailer, it will definitely be a colorful film with Emma Stone doing the character justice and will surely a great time. We’ll see if it’ll end up on Disney Plus and theaters as the same time.
Cruella comes to theaters on May 28, 2021.
What are your thoughts on Cruella? Are you going to see this in theaters or wait until it drops on Disney Plus?
