‘The Predator’ first look feels underwhelming for this retelling

Being born at the start of the 90’s, I missed out on a lot of classic movies that featured generational action heroes such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. Some of these movies I’m only now watching. I watched the 1987 cult classic science fiction film ‘Predator’ last year during a revival series at a local movie theater. Watching the high level of testosterone in the film, I finally got the full value and appreciation this film has earned over the years.

Now, after sequels, restarts, and a less-than-stellar crossover, a new story will be told.

A young boy accidentally triggers the Predators’ return to Earth. The universe’s most lethal hunters have genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. Only a crew of former soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can stop the hunters before anybody becomes their prey.

Director Shane Black (Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys) is in charge of this film, stating that he wants to make the franchise fresh and re-imaging of the franchise. He’s also confirmed that the film is set in present day 2018, following the events of Predator and Predator 2 but before the events of 2010’s Predators. So I can imagine that this film will have links to those previous films (I guess I need to watch Predator 2 soon).

Overall, this teaser does make me excited about this entry into the Predators franchise. However, it should be remembered that it is only a teaser. Maybe the full trailer will pique my interest more. We’ve still got a summer to get through.

The Predator strikes theaters on September 14, 2018.
